This church belongs to the Reykholar benefice in the
Bardastrond Deanery. A monastery was established on the island in 1172.
The island was the main centre of culture and education in Iceland
around the middle of the 19th century. The church was built in 1926 and
later decorated by the renowned artist Baltasar.
