The Snowy Mountain (Sierra Nevada) is the highest freestanding
mountain of the country (1833m). It is very prominent from many
directions and the view from its top is excellent on a fine day. It is
somewhat cone shaped, an ancient central volcano, created rather late
during the ice age. It has been dormant for at least 10 thousand years
and is probably extinct. It is considered to be the youngest volcano
of the eastern part of the country. Because of its height, its highest
lying snow patches do not disappear during summer.
Eyjabakkajokull is one of the main breeding areas of the pink footed
goose in the world. The estimated number of breeding pairs is 7000.
Before setting off
on the Highland routes, check the road conditions and remember that
there are unbridged rivers to be forded!
