Painter
Johannes Sveinsson Kjarval was raised at farm Geitavik, but he spent
his youth in Borgarfjordur east. He was 5 years old when he
moved from county Meddalland in the South, where he was born, to the
Borgarfjordur area.
The Gallery Kjarvalsstofa in the Cultural Community Centre endeavours
to present "Joi from Geitavik", as he was called. He
revolutionized the country's art history, and is most definately the
country's most beloved painter.
During his adult life, he spent many summers in the East to paint Mts
Dyrfjoll and the colourful landscapes of Borgarfjordur east and its
vicinity. He painted the altarpiece of the Bakkagerdi church in
1914. It was, and still is, the hamlet's most precious property.
Most visitors of this area pay the church a visit to see it.
The Galley tells the story of the altarpiece and all the heads he
painted. He sketched the faces of most of his compatriots in the
area in 1926. The exhibition connects them in a unique way to
the present. |
