This
museum was established by the Counsil of Seamen of the towns
Hellissandur and Rif to preserve the history of fishermen
and fishing stations in the area. Among many
interesting artefacts on display are old one stroke engines,
the fishermen's abode Thorvaldarbud, and the oldest still
preserved fishing boat, Bliki, an open eight oars' vessel,
built in 1826. This boat was used for the fisheries
until 1965. The museum also owns the open rowing boat
Olafur Skagfjord, which is going to be displayed soon.
Among other things of interest are a topographical map,
boulders, which were used by the fishermen to test their
bodily strength and the sculpture "The Glacier People" by
sculptor Ragnar Kjartansson.
The westernmost part of the museum grounds is ideal for all
kinds of celebrations. From there a path takes people
to a great vantage point with spectacular panoramic view.
This path continues through the Sandahraun lava field to the
outdoor sports' area.
The museum is open from June 1st to August 31st at
09;30-18;00. Mondays closed. |
