Santa
Cruz de Tenerife is a city and port in the Canary Islands on the
northeast coast of Tenerife (largest of the Canaries), and the capital
of Santa Cruz de Tenerife Province. It is a major refuelling port for
shipping, and its principal exports are fruit and vegetables grown on
the island. Surrounded by beautiful scenery, the city is the base of a
substantial tourist industry on the island. Santa Cruz de Tenerife was
founded in 1494, and in 1797 Horatio Nelson lost his right arm in a
battle here. Population (1991 est.) 189,317.
