ITINERARY
Visit village Raufarhofn next to Melrakkasletta
has been an authorized trading post since 1836 and fishing, fish
processing and commerce are the main bases of livelihood. During the
so-called herring years in the seventies, Raufarhofn was one of the
most important ports for unloading, processing and the export of
herring products. The plateau Melrakkasletta
(Arctic Fox Plain) is the northernmost part of the mainland, almost on
the arctic circle and closest to the midnight sun.
Day 1.
Pick up the car today and head
to Raufarhofn via
Husavik,
is a town on the eastern shores of The Skjalfandi Bay. It is a commercial
centre for a large agricultural area and processing of farm produce plays
a considerable role in the town’s economy. Then drive to National park
Jokulsarglufur and continu to Asbyrgi before Continuing
to Raufarhofn,
Overnight for the next 4 nights.
Day
2. Fishing
In lake
Ytra Deildarvatn
Lake Deildarvatn has
an area of 1,3 km˛. It is rather shallow and situated 38 m above sea
level. Its catchment area includes the rivers Fremri-Deildara and Oldua
and a few brooks. Its discharge, river Deildara, one of the finest
salmon rivers of the Northeast, spills into the sea. The distance from
the main road (85) to the lake
is 4,5 km and it is accessible by car from the
airstrip east of the lake and from the farmstead Holl. The landscape
around the lake is boggy. The lake abounds in fish,
lake char and brown trout (1-2 pounders). Salmon run through it to
enter the upper part of river Deildara.The
bait: Fly, spoon and worm.
Day
3.
Sea Angling from
Raufarhofn
The fishermen
there are expert sea anglers and can smell the richest fishing grounds
from far away.
Their boats are specially equipped for the purpose and the catch belongs
to the anglers. Beware, it might be too much to carry home. The
chef at the guesthouse
or boat captain can preparing a good meal from the catch upon
request.

4. Fishing
In lake
Hraunhafnarvatn and
lake
Aedarvatn
Lake Hraunhafnarvatn has an area of 3,4 km˛. It is situated 2 m
above sea level and its greatest depth is 3 m. River Hraunhafnara enters it from the
south and it is discharged through the narrow gravel reef Hestamol.
Road no. 85 passes along
the northern shoreline. The lake abounds in lake char (˝-2
pounders) and brown trout (1-4 pounders). The Brown Trout is
mainly caught at the mouth of river Hraunhafnara, where the anglers have
to walk. The
bait: Fly, spoon and worm.
Lake
Aedarvatn it is rather
shallow and situated 35 m above sea
level. The landscape
around the lake is boggy. The lake abounds in fish,
lake char and brown trout (1-3 pounders).
Lake Aedarvatn is only appr. 5 Km. Southwest from
Hotel Raufarhofn.
The area abounds in many
species of breeding and visiting birds, a real paradise for
birdwatchers.

Day 5. Myvatn
Drive to Myvatn via Dettifoss is
Europe’s mightiest waterfall then to Lake Myvatn is
the country's fourth largest natural lake. It abounds in lake char and is
netted by the farmers the whole year round. The lake area is known world
wide for its exceptionally many breeding duck species (15) and the
abundance of other avifauna.

Day 6.
Akureyri
Drive
to Akureyri via Godafoss one of the
most impressive waterfalls of the country. It is situated in the 175 km
long glacial river Skjalfandafljot just south of road no. 1.
Spend the reast of the day in
Akureyri. The city offers you a unique charm and
culture. You can find good restaurants, elegant shops, excellent museum
and exciting night life.
