The
mountain hut Hildarsel (340m) is located east of glacial river Jokulsa
in valley Austurdalur in the Skagafjordur district. It is only
an easy eight kilometres' walking distance from the abandoned church
farm Abaer. Rivers Abaejara and Tinna are bridged and other
streams enroute are very small. This trail is also passable on
mountain-bikes and a pleasant bridle path. From the hut the
slope Fagrahlid is only 5 km away. It is one of the pearls of
nature, 350-500 metres above sea level, wooded with birches, which get
7 metres high. An ancient route lies across Mt Nyjabaejarfjall
to valley Villingadalur in the Eyjafjordur district. The hut
accommodates 16 people in bunks and 20 on matresses in the attic.
Hikers and riders have priority. Water has to be fetched to a
stream, about 50 metres away from the hut.
The access roads from Varmahlid are #752 and #758, about 50
kilometres. The stretch between the Monika-bridge and abandoned
church farm Abaer is not passabel by small cars with little ground
clearance. Near the hut are a horse stable and fenced grazings.
