Golf Club Akureyri was extablished in 1935. Its present and hopefully permanent golf course, Jadarsvollur, has excellent facilities.

Arctic Open is probably the most renowned tournaments held in Iceland during summer solstice.

Tournaments have even been held in winter with black balls in the snow.
Akureyri the fourth largest town of the country is often called "The Capital of the North". Its oldest parts are situated on a narrow strip of land and a spit of land at the end of the long bay Eyjafiordur. The younger parts are in the slopes above.
