Golf Club Vestmannaeyjar was founded on December 4th 1938.  Its golf course is among the most unusual ones because of its location in Valley Herjolfsdalur, stretching almost all the way to the steep coastal cliffs.  Players almost always have to take the windy conditions into account, as there are very few windstill days on the island.  Other recreational possibilities and the town are only a stone's trow away.

The only inhabited island, Heimaey, was struck by an unexpected eruption in 1973 and all the inhabitants had to be evacuated immediately. The Islanders base their livelihood on the fisheries and fish processing and tourism.
