HIKING TRAILS IN EAST ICELAND

9. Borgarfjordur –
Loğmundarfjordur
5-6 hours.
Rather a strenuous walk across pass Kraekjuskord (772m),
through vegetated areas, gravel and screes. Kirkjusteinn (Church
Stone) and Kollur (The Head) are well known names from the elf-mythology.
The starting point is by the bridge Thverarbru in
Borgarfjordur. The trail leads to river Lambadalsa bridge and
continues int valley Kaekjudalur. Kollur is a large, free standing
bolder a short distance from the bridge, but the "Elves Church" is located
further up the valley on the left hand side shortly before the trail turns
up to the pass. The uppermost part of the trail passes through a
steep, bolder strewn landscape. In the pass there is a snow patch.
In foggy weather conditions it might be difficult to spot the marker on
the other side of the snow. Therefore it is necessary to head
straight across the snow from the last marker.
The descent from the pass follows the top of ridge
Orrustukambur, trodden paths in the screes, bolder landscapes and flat
gravel. Down on Fitjar, the flat area in valley Hraundalur, a
pedestrian bridge is crossed, and then a jeep track continues to
Stakkahlid.
