The
present settlement in Brattahlid (Kagissiarssuk) started developing in
1924, and now between 200
and 300 people live there.
There the ruins of Eirikur the red’s farm still remind
of the flourishing, Icelandic settlements.
He settled there at the end of the 10th century.
He was among the great peopleof his time
and an excellent salesman, which he proved by persuading a
great number of his countrymen to
accompany him and settle in Greenland.
His
son, Leif the lucky, discovered North America around the year 1000.
Eirik’s wife, Thjodhildur, was baptized and built the first
church in Greenland, which actually was the first one on the North
American continent. Its ruins
still stand. The first
Greenlandic parliament was established at Brattahlid and its ruins are
still obvious. |
