HELLISHEIDI
GEOTHERMAL POWER PLANT
This
power plant is situated at
the foot of Mt. Hengill, an active volcanic ridge in
SW Iceland. The plant's purpose is to meet increasing demand for
electricity and hot water for space heating in the industrial and
domestic sectors. Current production capacity is 213 MW (february
2009). Estimated production capacity for the completed Hellisheiği
Plant is 300 MW electricity and 400 MW thermal energy.
The
main road around the country (#1), which connects the capital area with
the southern part of the country, lies across the
mountain road Hellisheidi.
The ancient route, which is still very prominent because of the
cairns, the lava hut (1830) and the deep grooves worn into the lava by
feet of domestic animals and people travelling trough.
The present road was opened for traffic in 1972.
The Hellisheiği Power Plant Visitor Center is open every day
from 09:00-17:00.
