Akureyri is the capital of the North, sometimes called the industry-, tourist- or museum town. It is also one of the most important fishing towns of the country.

The rich fishing grounds are nearby and the deep sea angling boats are specially equipped for the purpose. The catch belongs to the anglers, who can have it prepared in one of the restaurants in town upon request or in some instances on the boats. The distance from the capital is 390 km by the Whale Bay tunnel. The flight time from the capital is about 50 min.
