Lake
Fljotavatn has an area of about 3,9 kmē. It is rather shallow and is
located only 1 m above sea level. A few brooks supply it and it is
discharged through a lagoon to the sea in
Fljotavik. The only
approach is by sea and it is possible to land small airplanes on the
beach. The surroundings of the lake are beautifully vegetated.
The catch consists mainly of lake char and brown trout, but
also sea trout and char. According to an old legend it was impossible for polar bears to
find their way to the farms in the area as long as they were inhabited. Now all of them
have been abandoned.
The distance from the capital to Isafiord is about 455 km by the Whale Bay tunnel. |
