Hitarvatn has an area of about 7,6
km², its greatest depth is 26 m and it is situated 147 m above sea level. Its discharge
is the salmon river Hitara. Twenty five rods are permitted per day, so it is better to
make reservations on beforehand. The catch consists of lake char and brown trout. Good
fishing spots are in the proximity of brooks and along the lava bank.
The lake
is on road 593 and a 4wd track lies there from the farm Hitardalur. There is a refuge hut
with rest room facilities (lavatories) on the lake. The lake, the
river and the valley are named after the legendary ogress Hit, who lived there in the past.
Daily opening hours:
Fishing is allowed from dawn to dusk.
Season: Fishing is allowed from May
29th to August 31st.
Bait: All bait is allowed: fly, worm
and lure.
