This river has its sources at 330 m above sea level, small lakes in the mountains. Its course lies to the north until it discharges into the Steingrimsfjordur bay.

Its surroundings are renowned for natural beauty and the fishing spots are easily accessible. The main road crosses its lowest part and the catch is good sea char. The distance from the capital is about 263 km  by the Whale Bay tunnel and 12 km from Holmavik.
