River Nordlingafljot is the discharge of several lakes
in the moorland areas of Arnarvatnsheidi. It runs along the edge of a part
of the 50 km long lava field Hallmundarhraun (Grahraun) until it spills
into glacial River Hvita near the fascinating Lava Waterfalls. The
surroundings of the river are very diverse, lava fields and vegetated
areas. The lava field contains the longest and largest still discovered
lava cave system of the country, Surtshellir. It is accessible by the same
road as the fishing spots of River Nordlingafljot, just a bit further north-eastwards.
A great number of ocean-reared salmon is released into the river every
summer and the average size of the salmon caught there is 8-10 pounds.
The average yearly catch has been 900 salmons and four rods
are permitted per day. Some of the fishing spots have to be approached
on foot over a flat and easy terrain.
