Lake Sandvatn is rather shallow,  4 m deep, situated 381 m above sea level and has an area of 3 km².

Its catchment area is very small and its discharge is a small brook. The catch consists almost solely of lake char, ½-3 pounders. It is located just west of lake Myvatn and easily accessible by road.
The distance from the capital is about 488 km by the Whale Bay tunnel.
