The road up the Skaftartunga area, west of river
Skafta, is breathtakingly beautiful and
only passable by jeeps. Up in the central highlands the road bears the number F22. When
you have crossed the 40 km long volcanic fissure (from the year 900? AD) you take the
first turn to the right and drive along a brook called Skuggafjallakvisl
and a mountain
range called Graenifjallgardur all the way to the southwest end of lake Langisjor
and
the mountain Sveinstindur. Another track along the northwest side of the lake would lead
you to searching for fords to cross the many branches of the glacial river
Tungnaa to
reach the huts in Jokulheimar owned by the Icelandic Glaciological Society.
From road F22 and the mountain range Fogrufjoll
(Sveinstindur) you get an excellent view towards the crater row
Lakagigar and its lava fields created during a relatively short but very intensive and poisonous
eruption in 1783. It was the most damaging eruption during historical times in this
country. The young deserts and landscapes are so impressive and magnificent, that they
seem to lure people back time and again. |
