This is a run off river with its sources in the mountains of the district Dalasysla. On its way it collects water from the river Brekkua after which it is called Hvolsa. Its surroundings are well vegetated and the road connections are good. The main road runs along its banks and the landscape is majestic.  The catch consists mainly of  arctic char, but sometimes an occasional salmon is caught down river.

The distance from the capital is about 183 km by the Whale Bay tunnel and 28 km from the village Budardalur.
