Akureyri-Myvatn-Krafla-Dettifoss-Asbyrgi-Husavik-Akureyri
This tour to some of the most interesting spots in Iceland focuses on the
contrasts of the area. We start at the Akureyri Bus Terminal on a guided
tour to the Lake Myvatn area. On our way we stop at the Gošafoss
waterfall which is not only a beautiful waterfall, but has also played an
important role in the history of the country. From this scenic waterfall
the road takes us to Skutustadir. Intriguing pseudo-craters abound in
this area. Towards noon we arrive in Reykjahlid village.
Here we leave
the excursion bus and step into the Krafla - Dettifoss bus in front of
Hotel Reynihlid. The bus takes us through Bjarnarflag thermal area,
across Namafjall, with its lunar-like landscape, past Hverarond and its
boiling sulphur sources up to Viti, (Inferno) a big explosion crater.
Here we stop for a few (5-10) minutes.
From there we drive on to Dettifoss, Europe's most powerful waterfall,
through one of Iceland's largest lava terrains and arrive there at about
13:30. At 14:30 the bus departs from the waterfall and goes on to
Hafragilsfoss. Holmatungur, with its lush birch forest lined with
geraniums, orchids and crystal clear springs is our next destination
The Hljodaklettar (Echo Cliffs), are world
known for the basaltic columns that characterize the ancient crater
remains. You can stroll among the fabulous cliffs for an hour before
entering the Asbyrgi (Fortress of the Gods), formed as a horse footprint,
with the arctic vegetation at its best. On the way back to Akureyri, you
have time to visit Husavik, a beautiful fishing village, world renowned
for whale watching.
Please note that this tour is only partly guided, i.e. the part Akureyri -
Reykjahlid is guided, the rest is not.
