The route crosses the mountains east of the capital area, where the largest agricultural lowland area of the country stretches eastwards.  After that the road continues closer to the south coast along the glacier/volcano Eyjafjallajokull.

The lush green Bog Valley (Myrdalur) is crossed to reach the country's southernmost village, Vik.  East of Vik outwash plains and lava fields are crossed to reach Kirkjubaejarklaustur, The National Park Skaftafell, The Glacial Lagoon and eventually the point of return, the fishing town Hofn.

Eyrarbakki-Stokkseyri-Selfoss-Hveragerdi, one day
Drive over a part of the highland plateau Hellisheidi, drive trough Threngsli (Ūrengsli) to Eyrabakki and Stokkseyri then to Selfoss to Hveragerdi and over Hellisheidi plateau back to Reykjavik.
The distance for this tour is about 140 km.

South Shore, one or two Days
Drive over a part of the highland plateau Hellisheidi to Hveragerdi Along the south shore, with two waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss, view to Myrdalsjokull glacier and the small village Vik. Returning via Eyrarbakki and Stokkseyri and through the Threngsli lava plateau between the mountains to Reykjavik. The distance for this tour is about 390 km.

Gullfoss-Geysir ( The Golden Circle) one or two days.
Drive over a part of the highland plateau Hellisheidi to Hveragerdi  or over Mosfellsheidi to Thingvellir National Park  then to Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir hot spring, and of the country's most important historic sites, Skalholt and hamlet Laugaras, other sights at the Fludir and Arnes/Thjorsardalur farmlands. The distance for this tour is about 270-300 Km.

2-4 days
Day 1: Reykjavik - Gullfoss/Geysir - Kirkjubaejarklaustur
Across the mountains to Hveragerdi to Selfoss, or over Mosfellsheidi plateau to Thingvellir National Park  then to Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir hot spring, and of the country's most important historic sites, Skalholt and hamlet Laugaras, other sights at the Fludir and Arnes/Thjorsardalur farmlands. and onwards to until the first overnight, at Hella,  Hvolsvollur,  Skogafoss,  Vik or Kirkjubaejarklaustur, is reached.

Day 2: Kirkjubaejarklaustur - Hofn
After a visit in the Skaftafell National Park at the foot of the highest peak of the country, the tour continues to the Glacial Lagoon and eventually to the next port of call, the fishing town Hofn,

Day 3: Hofn - Vik
It is ideal to visit a few places like Nupsstadur, Dverghamrar, Hjorleifshofdi and Kerlingardalur when backtracking to Vik, where an overnight is suggested, or drive back to Reykjavik.

Day 4: Vik - Reykjavik
It is impossible to pass the imposing waterfall Skogafoss and the remarkable Skogar Museum and the swimming pool at Seljavellir is tempting on our way to the waterfall Seljalandsfoss.  Then we continue to the town Selfoss and drop in at Eyrarbakki and Stokkseyri before returning passing Threngslin plateau to Reykjavik.
