Drive
(Lake Myvatn)along the eastern shores of the
Eyjafjordur Bay, over the
mountain pass Vikurskard to waterfall
Godafoss. About 30 km further east is Lake Myvatn with its
many wonders of nature (Skutustadir pseudo craters,
Hofdi,
Dimmuborgir, Tuffring Hverfjall, Fissure Grjotagja,
Hverarond,
Krafla area) and Nature Baths.
Route to Myvatn are open all year weather permitting. Husavik offers many recreational and ecucational possibilities, i.e.
Whale Watching (North
Sailing
and
Gentle Giants),
The Whale Centre,
The Icelandic Phallological Museum,
The Folk Museum of Husavik,
and lovly surroundings. Driving
further east along the coastline,
only 27 miles to the south of the arctic circle takes us to the
Kelduhverfi area with the third
national park,
(summer only)
Jokulsargljufur, with the picturesque landscapes of the
Asbyrgi Canyon,
the
The Whispering Cliffs,
Holmatungur,
and Europes mighties waterfall
Dettifoss.
Further south, near the crossing of road #1 and the road into the
interior, is the interesting tuffring
Hrossaborg. From there the road takes us back to the Lake
Myvatn area and Akureyri.
To be able to enjoy all the marvellous attractions it is recommended
to spend one night enroute, i.e. in Husavik or on Lake Myvatn. |
