The restaurant Christian X was opened on November
13th 1999. The house was origingally built in the Parliamentary
Plains (Thingvellir) in 1930, where it served as a dining house for King
Christian X of Denemark on his visist to the country to celebrate the
millenium of the Icelandic Parliament. Five years later it was
moved to the waterfall Ljosafoss downriver of the discharge of lake
Thingvallavatn to serve as a canteen for the construction workers of the
hydroelectric power station. In 1938 it was moved to Hella, where
it served as a warehouse until a few years ago. In April 1999 the
present owner started the restoration work which he finished in November
the same year. The walls of the restaurant are decorated with
pictures of Christian X and a fishing rod he used to catch salmon in
River Ellidaar in Reykjavik.
The restaurant offers delicious meals for every
occasion (lamb, steaks, fish, chicken, pizzas, hamburgers, etc.).
It also caters for groups as well as private functions. It is a
friendly place which also offers live music. |
