Eskifjordur is a branch of the larger bay Reyðarfjordur, which cuts into the
mountainous area of the Eastfiords region. On it is
the fishing village Eskifjordur. Originally it was a Danish trading post
(from 1798). One of the old merchant houses, Gamlabud (1816), has been
restored and houses The Maritime Museum. The village has been the seat of
the district magistrate since 1853. One of the places
of interest in its
proximity is an old mine, where Iceland Spar was mined for almost four centuries until the
first part of the 20th century. Mt Holmatindur is one of the most prominent mountains on the bay and where
its lower shoulder drops into the sea a nature reserve has been
proclaimed.
Fishing and fish processing are flourishing bases of livelihood and
tourism is gaining ground.
