The boundaries of the East are drawn at the towns Bakkafjordur in the Northeast and The National Park Skaftafell in the Southeast. Towns, villages, places of interest and recreation are mentioned below the map in the Travel Guide. The East is relatively sparsely populated except for the third largest lowland area of the country, Herad. The landscape is mostly mountainous. On both sides of Herad are mountain ranges with narrow strips of lowlands along the bays.
