Gjogur is an old, renowned fishing
hamlet at the head of the Reykjafjordur bay. It is best know for its shark fisheries
in the past. Sometimes 15 open rowboats left at the same time to
spend a few days on the ocean shark fishing.
Gjogur is one of the almost totally abandoned communities in this part of the country, but a bit further
north the former farm Nordurfjordur offers accommodation during summer.
Driftwood has played an
important role in this otherwise deforested country ever since it
was settled.
Djupavik
is a former fishing station and a fish
processing centre at the end of the Reykjafjordur Bay. A Herring pickling factory
was established there in 1917, but was declared bankrupt in 1920.
It was restarted
in 1934 and continued operating until 1954.
Hotel Djupavik is open the whole year round.
The distance from the capital is around 350 km and 74 km from Holmavik. See
more under Places of Interest to the left.
