Murders and Executions
There are many
attractions and important historical sites
in the South (The Book of Settlements, Njal's Saga and Sturlunga
Saga). Recreational activities on offer are very varied and
interesting.
Driftwood was gathered from the
coastline in the past.
East Iceland The East is relatively
sparsely populated except for the third largest lowland area of the
country, Herad. The landscape is mostly mountainous. On both sides of
Herad are mountain ranges with narrow strips of lowlands along the
bays.
This area is closely conntected with the Sagas.
North Iceland This area is a relatively
densely populated agricultural region with a few hamlets and villages.
The landscape is varied with differently large mountain ranges dividing
the lowland areas. The three most powerful
dynasties of the country had fought for power for decades and the
struggle in North Iceland, which turned out to be the most fateful one
for the country.
West Iceland This part of the country is
the richest in Saga literature and is connected withan abundance of Sagas, such as The Book of Settlements,
Gunnlaugssaga, Hardarsaga
Njalssaga, Laxdaelasaga, Egilssaga,
Eyrbyggjasaga, The Greenlander Saga and the Gislasaga.
