The
spit of land Langeyjarnes and the islands Inner and Outer Langey and
Arney belong to the Dalir District and extend to the southwest from the
Klofningur County.
The first source to mention Island Arney is the Sturlunga Saga,
when two of the chieftains of the 13th century had an
encounter.
The channel Arneyjarsund is mentioned in this context.
It is the main route between the islands Bildsey, Arney and
Fagurey and never dries up
during lowest tides.
Farming was considerable on Island Arney during the centuries and
for a long while it was the property of Farm Skard as so many other
islands and islets in the area.
In 1705, 19 people occupied three farms.
Two years later there were 15 inhabitants at two farms, which
kept 8 heads of cattle and 45 sheep.
In 1920, nine people lived on the island and permanent residence
continued until after the middle of the 20th century.
Since then the houses have been maintained and the owners have
spent time there during summer.
The island is rich in topographical names, but few stories are
connected with them.
There are, however, quite a few stories about the elves or the
hidden people and their communications with the human inhabitants. |
