Island Hjorsey has an area of 5,5 km².  It is the largest island off the West Coast and belongs to District Myrarsysla.  It is well vegetated and usually was occupied by many people, either in a few small farms or a big estate.  The greatest advantages of the island were driftwood and fishing.  The sea area off the Myrarsysla Coast is dotted with lava cliffs and skerries and therefore dangerous to navigate.  Many vessels have run aground there, such as the French research vessel Pourquoi Pas in on September 16th 1936.  Dr. Charcot was the expedition leader.  Only the third officer was rescued by an Icelander from the farm Straumfjordur.  The last church of the island was demolished shortly before the turn of the 19^th century.
