These are four islands situated to the west of the
only inhabited island, Heimaey. The southernmost one is Haena (The
Hen), then Hani (The Cock), Hrauney and Grasleysa. The channel between
Smaeyjar and Heimaey is deep and clear for boat traffic.
The cave Kafhellir in Haena is easily accessible by boat
when the sea is calm and the tides are low. When the evening
sun shines into it the whole spectrum of colours can be experienced in there.
Some light comes into the cave through a submarine opening on the
northern side of the island.
According to
local legends, a fisherman once fell overboard from his boat and was
sucked through this small opening. When he surfaced in the cave, his
boat had already been carried in there and he could crawl aboard
again. In extremely bad weather conditions soil and vegetation have
been washed off the islands by the breakers. |
