This village on the northern side of bay Nordfjordur
became an authorized trading post in 1895 and the village
started developing around it. Until 1949, when the road from Eskifjordur
was built across the mountains, the inhabitants
relied mainly on sea transport. In 1977 a tunnel was
excavated through the mountain and the communications on
dry land were ensured the whole year round.
Recreational opportunities are varied,
both on sea and land.
There are
many interesting hiking trails in the area.
The
easternmost tip of the country, Mt Gerpir, with
the oldest basaltic strata of the country, is nearby.
Neskaupsstadur offers accommodations and restaurants.
If you are heading to town Eskifjord, you should
take a look at the road and weather conditions of Mt Pass
Oddskard before continuing to Neskaupstadur.
