The Bay of The Whooper Swans is about 7 miles
(12 km) long and a mile (1,6 km) wide. Two short valleys branch to the
south of the bay. There the Norwegians operated their herring- and
whale processing factories during the last decades of the 19th
century. In 1995 an avalanche killed 19 of the
inhabitants.
During that period, many more people lived on the bay than
nowadays. The only remaining settlement is the fishing hamlet Sudavik.
