Almenningar is a lava patch between the lava fields Kapelluhraun and Afstapahraun in the Vatnsleysustrond County.  This area was formerly wooded, but extensive grazing and exploitation left it barren.  Since the turn of the 19^th century, this area has remained much the same.  The name of the area means “Common pastures”, of the farms Hraun, and has remained unchanged for centuries.
