Fljot is the northernmost inhabited area of the
eastern part of the district Skagafiord. At the end of the cove
Fljotavik is another one, Haganesvik, and a wide lowland area, dotted
with lagoons, with the main habitation is. Further south is the valley
Flokadalur and the county Stifla. The whole Fljot and Stifla counties
are covered with a thick blanket of snow during winter and during
summer it is rather rainy. There were several fishing- and shark
fishing outfits along the shoreline in the past.
Many farms were
abandoned during the 20th century. There is some geothermal activity
in the area (20-70°C). In Stifla the main river was dammed and a
small hydroelectric power station was built. Most of the valley floor
disappeared under water. A spectacular route over the mountain pass
Lagheidi is passable by all vehicles during summer. Schedule bus stop
is at Ketilas in Fljot
during summer. |
