This oblong county stretches along the western side
of the lake towards the central volcano mountain massif Hengill and
Mt. Ingolfsfjall. All islands of the lake are within the county
boundaries. The steep and sheltered shoreline of the lake is dotted
with privately owned holiday houses in well-vegetated and beautiful
surroundings.
The distance from the crossing on the Thingvellir road
to the geothermal power station Nesjavellir is about 12 km. The power
station, situated in a very active high temperature area, supplies the
capital area with about 20% of its hot water used for central heating
and other purposes.
A nice hotel near the station constructions offers
among other things the possibility of short and extended hikes on well
marked paths, both summer and winter, and organized snow scooter tours
in winter. The roads from the hotel and the power station fork in the
directions towards the hydroelectric power stations on the discharge
of Lake Thingvallavatn
and through the beautiful landscapes of the
mountain massif towards the capital area. |
