Hofmannaflot is a flat plain on the eastern side of
Mt. Armannsfell and north of the National Park Thingvellir. It is
framed with low mountains on three sides and open towards the south.
Two of the main approaches of the Parliamentary Plains, from the West
and the North cross paths there.
Secondary mountain roads have taken
their places and nowadays many more travellers pass through than in
the past. These roads are the so-called Kaldidalur Route, the
Uxahryggja Route and the Linuvegur Route (4wd). The plain was
cultivated for hay making in the past and during winter it is hidden
under a thick layer of snow. The melt water in spring creates a
temporary lake, sometimes frozen over and a dangerous trap for motor
vehicles.
According to the legends, this plain was the meeting place
of the giants and giantesses of the country. |
