The
Hunafloi Gulf is 30 miles across between the peninsulas Skagi in the
east, and
Krossanes in the Strandir District. Its greatest length from its
mouth to the end of the Hruta Bay exceeds 60 miles. Its western side
is indented with fiords and coves, and three fiords extend to the
south. It differs in depth and the smallest lowland areas are on its
western side. Still nowadays considerable schools of fish enter the
gulf and it is rich in shrimp. Every now and then icebergs drift in
and out during the summer. In 1244, the
only sea battle of the country's history took place on the gulf - Cod Wars
excluded.
