The spit
of land Hvalfjardareyri is on the southern shores of the Whale Bay.
Before the road was built around the bay, travellers were ferried from
there to farm Katastadakot on the oppositer side. Some discussions about a
car ferry from this spot led to some preparations, which were eventually
abandoned. During the latter part of the 17th century a
trading post developed there. Considerable quantities of gravel and
sand are pumped from the bottom of the bay off the spit for
constructional purposes. Collectors of
strange and half precious stones are often seen nosing about in this
area. |
