Jokulfirdir, The Glacier Bays, branch out of the larger Isafjordur Bay in the northernmost Westfjords area. Most of the area along the bay was sparsely populated except for the hamlets at Grunnavik and Hesteyri.

The last settlements were abandoned in the sixties but a few of the houses have been maintained and are used as summer lodgings. This is an ideal area for relaxation and hiking in beautiful surroundings. The area was declared a nature reserve in 1975.
