Kaldalon is a 5 km long bay branching to the north
from the large Isafiord Bay. One of the few glacier tongues of the
only glacier of the Northwest, Drangajokull, flows down into the short
valley at its end. The Morilla River is its discharge and gradually
delivers silt deposits, which are filling it up. During the 18th
century, the glacier tongue advanced far enough to bury the farm
Lonholl.
According to written
sources, another farm called Trimbilstadir stood there in
the past, but there are no traces of it left. The road
crosses the Morilla River and ends at the abandoned farm
Tyrdilmyri. Actually the entire length of the northern
shoreline of the Isafiord Bay is deserted, all the farms
there have been abandoned. One of the most beloved composers
of the country, Sigvaldi Kaldalons,
who also was a doctor of medicine, lived in Kaldalon for a
time. He took up the name Kaldalon, because the natural
beauty of the place spellbound him. |
