Laugaland actually comprises two farms, Outer and
Southern Laugaland, in Eyjafjordur County. An
elementary school has been operated there since 1950 and
nowadays a secondary school as well. A domestic
science school was operated during the period 1937-75.
Laugaland has been the seat of a reverend since 1935. A good indoor
swimming pool is connected to the school.
The
Akureyri Geothermal Heating Authority sank some boreholes with good
results at Laugaland and constructed a 12 km long pipeline to town.
The temperature of the water at the boreholes was 95°C and the
capacity of the pipeline 500 l/sec. The first house in Akureyri was
connected to the geothermal heating system in November 1977. Hot
water is pipelined to Laugaland from extra boreholes at Hrafnagil and
Outer Tjarnir. |
