The Icelanders almost lost the location of the Law
Cliff, but fortunately found it again. At least that is the common
belief. It does not change the documented facts about its role in
society and the structure of power during the Free State Period
(930-1262).
The parliament probably was founded on the so-called
Pagan
Law Cliff on a lava ridge
between the Flosa- and Nikulas-chasms, where the law giving
assembly once sought refuge. Then it was moved to the
so-called „Christian Law Cliff", where the common assembly,
the recital of the law and proclamations of new law took
place. The law giving assembly was the highest institution
of the parliament. The power lay in the hands of the
chieftains, who shared the middle bench of this assembly
with the Law Speaker and later the two bishops of the country.
Sometimes large groups of warlike men assembled outside to
try to influence the results of important issues debated there.
Because of this constant danger the search for a safe assembly place
continued without great results.
The Christian Law Cliff is situated
on the lower brink of the Almannagja fault, where square shaped lava
rocks, which probably served as seats, were found, but later moved
down to the river. |
