The Merkurtungur Area lies between the South and North Gorges (Nordurgil and Sudurgil) and is really the area at the end of Gorge Hvannargil where it splits.  It is the smallest summer pasture area, surrounded by the sheer cliffs of both gorges.  The land on top is almost totally vegetated, and is called the Plains (Slettur).  Mt Merkurtungnahaus is close to the edge of the glacier.
