Baula (934 metres) is a cone
shaped, rhyolite laccolith to the west of The Nordura Valley. Pure
laccoliths of this type are not to be found in Iceland, but similar
natural phenomena are rather common, such as Mt. Hlidarfjall on Lake
Myvatn, Mts. Hagongur in the central highlands etc. All of them were
created during sub glacial eruptions.
The rhyolite magma is very viscous and creates such
laccoliths instead of spreading. The view from the top on a fine day
is spectacular. According to the legend, there should be a pond on top
of the mountain and one night every year a wishing stone should
surface there. The mountain was first climbed in 1851. |
