Mt
Glodarfeykir (910 m.), decorating the landscape on the eastern side of
Valley Skagafjordur with its regular and steplike basaltic strata, is the
most prominent mountain facing those who arrive from the west
decending the Mt Pass Stora Vatnsskard. In 1551, the Danish king sent
a detail of soldiers to Iceland to fight the followers of the late,
catholic bishop Jon Arason (1550), who sitll opposed the reformation in the
North. Upon receiving the news of their arrival in the Eyjafiord
Area, Helga, the mistress of the late bishop, took her most valuable
belongings, and, in the company of most of the other women at Holar,
they
pitched camouflaged tents in the slopes of Mt Glodafeykir during the
time the soldiers were looking for her. The farmers in the
area secretly suppied the women with necessities during their
hide.
