Mt Hafursey is a small basaltic hyaloclastite mountain on the northern alluvial plain Myrdalssandur.  It is split by a gorge called Klofgil and the western part is named Mt Skalarfjall (582 m).  The lower eastern part is named Mt Kistufell (513 m).  The mountain was excellent for whole year’s grazings and summer pastures for the sheep of the farm Hjorleifshofdi further south.

The lower slopes are relatively well vegetated and facing west is a cave, which was used by the travellers as a shelter until a hut was built shortly after the turn of the 20^th century.  Later the National Life Saving Association of Iceland built a rescue hut there.  In 1955 the road was moved much further south.
