This
cluster of reddish looking craters is situated in the Grimsnes County. They are along with the smaller crater row Tjarnarholar and
the surrounding lava field, about 6000 years old.
The view from their tops is excellent on a fine day.
The scoria of the craters is very colourful, especially in the
quarries, which look like ugly scars in the landscape.
The scoria is used for road building and the foundations of
houses. Its red colour is
created by the iron oxidation and clearly shows that there is no lack of
this metal in the country, but it is too expensive to mine it. |
