The Suganda Bay is about 8 miles (13 km) long and 2,2
miles (4 km) wide at the mouth. It is rather shallow, especially near
the village Sudureyri. Steep mountains frame it, and the main lowland
area is in the valley at the end of the bay. Avalanche danger is great.
Some geothermal activity enables the villagers to heat their houses with
natural hot water. This area was very isolated before the tunnels to
Isafiord and Flateyri were opened in 1995, as the mountain road was
rarely passable in winter. Lignite strata exist near the farm Botn and
were exploited in the past (the last time 1940-1942). |
