These waterfalls just east of Mt. Burfell look more
like rapids when River
Thjorsa swells, but after the
construction of the hydroelectric power station Burfell in 1970, the
riverbed is almost empty. Between these two waterfalls the third and a
nameless one decorates the landscape.
The Thjofafoss (The Waterfall of the
Thieves) was named after thieves, who were punished for their crimes
by drowning. The Trollkonuhlaup (The Giantess Waterfall) was named
after the giantess, who lived in her cave in Mt. Burfell and wanted to
be able to get to the other side of the river without getting wet. She
threw some boulders into the river as stepping-stones. Her sister
lived in a cave in Mt. Bjolfell near Mt. Hekla,
and they visited each other every now and then.
A short distance to
the east is an oasis by voluminous cold springs, the source of the
good salmon river Ytri-Ranga.
It only takes a short detour to drive to these waterfalls from the
main road. |
